Leopards win first-ever lifting meet

EDNA – The Leopards won their first powerlifting meet in the history of the program Saturday in Edna with nine lifters competing.
Powerlifting meets allow a maximum roster of 11 lifters, but Van Vleck took the meet title with two boys missing from the squad.
A.J. Mangum, a senior, was named the Most Outstanding Lifter after hefting a 635-pound deadlift. He won first place in the 181-pound division with a total lift of 1325 pounds.
Junior Sam Butler was first in the 165-pound class after a 1,130-pound total lift. Brashard Bree, a freshmen, was third with a 1,005 and sophomore Leslie Thomas-Glass was fourth with a lift of 1,000 pounds in the same class.
Victor Pena, the only senior lifter, took first in the 148-pound division with a 975-pound lift and freshman Marc Hernandez was third in 123 with 635 pounds.
Juniors Javier Escobedo and Kevin Nunez and freshman Johnny Coston competed with Van Vleck in the meet but didn’t place above fifth.
